May bank holiday in Oxford 2022

The Dorchester festival – 29th April – 8th May 2022

This year happily sees the return of the biennial Dorchester- On- Thames festival based in and around Dorchester Abbey. From Scandi baking to cocktail making this festival has everything for the community and beyond.  A dynamic program of children’s activities, culture, and community development helps raise money for local charities. Since 2005 this festival attracts over 3,000 per year and if you check out the schedule you will see why. Culture vultures eat your heart out, there is something for everyone.  Monteverdi’s vespers by night, Lego builders club in the day, not to mention yoga and custard walks (?) Back with a vengeance for all things vintage and motorized and more! For the enthusiasts, there will be Classic Cars, Classic Motorcycles, Commercial vehicles, Miniature steam tractors, Classic Caravans, and the model tent.  For the younger folk most definitely a bouncy castle, funfair, and face painting.  West Oxford shire Animal Sanctuary will be bringing the furry and feathered folk, and there will be various fun dog shows.   It wouldn’t be a country show without archery, a car boot sale, and bands.  In this classic country fair, there is bargain entry for £5 and camping for £10 per night.  Guaranteed family fun and a classic English day out.  Opening at 10 am every day. https://lechladecollectorsclub.co.uk/

 Jousting tournament at Blenheim Palace – April 30th – May 2nd 2022

May Bank Holiday sees the Knights of Middle England jousting full tilt into the 21st Century with their action-packed weekend of pageantry , and traditional equestrian action.  With jousting, jesters and birds of prey, this is going to be full medieval revelry. https://www.blenheimpalace.com/whats-on/events/jousting.html

Blenheim Palace – something for everyone

Once the weather warms up it’s great to take the family out of the house and where better than to someone else’s stately home? This UNESCO World Heritage site is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture with 2000 acres of Capability Brown landscaped parkland. As the gardens spring to life so do the entertainment options. Adventure playgrounds, a giant hedge maze, butterfly house and a miniature train guarantee even the liveliest folk will be occupied.

Dining options at Blenheim Palace

There are also many options for eating and drinking as you explore all that is on offer in this stately pleasure realm.  The Orangery restaurant for lunch, traditional afternoon teas or a Sunday roast.  Two café options for lighter refreshments and the Pleasure Garden Deli serves pizza, sandwiches, and has a children’s menu.  An inspiring experience that can please all age groups.

Pisarro Exhibition at the Ashmolean Oxford

18th Feb- 12th June 2022

Oxford has the leading edge when it comes to art this Springtime.  The Ashmolean is the University of Oxford’s Museum of art and technology with an incredibly rich collection of art and artefacts. Curating half a million years of history and creativity within the centre of Oxford, they have their finger on the pulse for excellent exhibitions.  Known as “The Father of Impressionism” this collection spans Pissarro’s entire life’s work and includes Ashmolean exhibits with loans from international collections.  Complete the day with fine European dining on the rooftop terrace.  Booking is essential for this exhibition.

Literary walking tours in Oxford

Oxford offers various literary tours all year round where the city can be seen through the eyes of various authors and their influential works.  The Phillip Pullman tour explores the setting of the new The Book of Dust and rediscovers the world of His Dark Materials.  This tour endorsed by the author himself provides a fascinating insight into the places which inspired his world-famous works.  There is also a Harry Potter tour for fans and families, and the official C.S Lewis and Tolkien walking tour.  Following the footsteps of the “Inklings” this tour explores the lives and works of these important authors of the 20th Century, in their place of inspiration.   Whatever the time of year, there is always imagination and inspiration in the streets of Oxford.
